Edakkal Caves

Situated at the Ambukutty Mala, it is a pre-historic rock shelter. The term Edakkal literally means “A stone in between”, and it is aptly named. The cave is a naturally formed disposition of three huge boulders. One of the boulders rests between the other two. The bottom juts out in between and serves as a roof. The discovery of the cave is as interesting as the structure itself! in the year 1894, the then Superintendent of Police, Fawcett, who also happened to be an avid pre-historic explorer, accidentally found this structure when he was exploring the high ranges of Wayanad. The sanctuary engulfs a massive area of 345 sq km and is a host to exotic flora and fauna. In the year 1992, this sanctuary was declared as a site of Project Elephant. The main objective of this project is prevention of ruthless killing of the elephants. This is the reason you can spot a vast number of elephants roaming freely in this region.

Banasura Sagar Dam

Banasura Sagar Dam is famous as the largest earth dam in India. The dam is is close to the Karalad Lake. An interesting feature is a set of islands that were formed when the reservoir submerged the surrounding areas. Lakkidi view point

Chain Tree near Lakkidi

According to folklore, the British engineers who built the roads in Wayanad district murdered a tribal man to enforce their claim of finding the routes and paving the roads in the district without using help from any local person.

It is believed that his angry spirit has been chained to the tree by a local priest. The chains have bound the rage of the roaming spirit. This is why the tree is called the Chain Tree, and unsurprisingly, attracts a lot of tourists.

Pookot Lake

This temple, which is now a ruin, is believed to have been built in the 13th century. This belief also testifies the early and strong presence of Jain population in this region. Tipu Sultan took over this abandoned temple and used it as his battery. The name of this temple eventually evolved to “Sulthan Bathery”.

Thirunelli Temple

The safari usually lasts for 2-4 hours twice a day from 7 am to 9 am and 3 pm to 5 pm. Experienced guides from the forest department will be at your disposal all the time.

Pakshipathalam

This is the most challenging tourist spot in the Wayanad district. Situated 7 kilometers to the north-east of Thirunelli temple, Pakshipathalam is 1740 meters above mean sea level. Pakshipathalam can be reached after covering a distance of 17 kilometers through wild forest. Visiting Pakshipathalam would need tourists a special permission from the forest department.
