Situated at the Ambukutty Mala, it is a pre-historic rock shelter. The term Edakkal literally means “A stone in between”, and it is aptly named. The cave is a naturally formed disposition of three huge boulders. One of the boulders rests between the other two. The bottom juts out in between and serves as a roof.
The discovery of the cave is as interesting as the structure itself! in the year 1894, the then Superintendent of Police, Fawcett, who also happened to be an avid pre-historic explorer, accidentally found this structure when he was exploring the high ranges of Wayanad. It is the world’s richest pictographic gallery of its kind.
