Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary
Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is an animal sanctuary in Wayanad,Kerala. It has an extent of 344.44 km2 with four ranges, namely Sulthan Bathery, Muthanga, Kurichiat and Tholpetty. A variety of large wild animals such as Indian bison, elephant, deer and tiger are found there. Established in 1973, the sanctuary is now an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Edakkal Cave are two natural caves at a remote location at Edakkal, 25 km from Kalpetta in the Wayanad. The name ‘Edakkal’ literally means ‘a stone in between’. Here you can see a cave formed by a heavy boulder straddling a fissure in the rock. The caves contain drawings that range over periods from the Neolithic as early as 5,000 BC to 1,000 BCE. Inside the caves are pictorial writings believed to date to at least 6,000 BCE. The caves were discovered by Fred Fawcett, the then Superintendent of Police of the Malabar district in 1890, during his hunting trip to Wayanad.

In Sanskrit, this type of confluence is called Triveni, meaning three rivers. Such a confluence is considered very sacred.
The Omkareshwara Temple was built by Linga Rajendra the second as an homage to Lord Shiva in the year 1820. The architecture of this temple is interestingly a beautiful combination of Hindu and Mohammedan style. The temple has a central dome while four turrets don the four corners.
According to the locals, the king killed a Brahmin saint to fulfill a political ambition. To repent and appease the deceased’s spirit, the king got this temple constructed. It is said that the spirit haunted the king and this urged him to bring a Shiva Linga from Kashi and install it here.
